About Me

My photo
After years of sloth, I am now a mama who runs and practices yoga. I write about exercise; parenting a grownup child as well as two little kids; and whatever is annoying me at the moment.

This vegan movement thing... hmm...

So the hook to my latest story was that even Hugh Jackman's doing it -- trying to eat a healthier, plant-based diet rather than a meat protein-heavy one that he's used to bulk up for his past "Wolverine" comic superhero movie roles. According to another story, the 41-year-old movie-star dad wants to be lean and muscular but take care of his heart, too.

I've eaten vegan and there are some good foods to do that with, but I gotta admit it would be really hard to go mostly or all vegan -- ordering out at restaurants would be a pain in the butt, too. I spent half my childhood in Nebraska, aka cattle country. I don't doubt that a plant-based diet isn't just awesome for you, but the idea suggested by Brendan Brazier in my story of consuming things like rice and pea protein -- man, that is hard to get excited about. However, the elite athlete has actually won events like Ironman races (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a marathon -- 26.2 miles) so he's obviously on to something.

I do eat a lot more fruits and veggies as I've gotten older and I like them a lot more than I used to, but man, it's hard to pass up meat sometimes. And soy cheese just doesn't cut it. So, my motto is I *try* to stick to is everything in moderation.

As for Hugh, well, I felt better when I saw a picture of him in US Weekly this week sneaking a bite of sugar cookie from his daughter. Whew, celebrities *are* just like us.
