About Me

After years of sloth, I am now a mama who runs and practices yoga. I write about exercise; parenting a grownup child as well as two little kids; and whatever is annoying me at the moment.

Getting back to "normal"

After adding terms like "Chiberia" and "polar vortex" to my vocabulary this week following the coldest spell in Chicago in 25 years, it got above zero degrees yesterday for the first time in 36 hours. Schools would reopen and I might skip wearing long underwear to work. A snapshot of my evening last night and morning today as things got back to "normal":
  • Arrive home around 7 p.m. to wild kids tearing around the house
  • Wrestle wild kids in the bathtub
  • Ask daddy read to wild kids while I fold laundry
  • Chase wild kids to bed
  • Take one wild kid to the potty
  • Do 40 burpees because I forgot to do my daily 20 the previous day. Sucks.
  • Eat dinner and chill to DVR’ed Daily Show, Colbert Report
  • Zzzzz 10:30-4:50 a.m.
  • Run on track at gym, swear at iPhone app which cut out and undercounted my mileage
  • Wake up wild children who have been out of school wayyyyy too long (since before Christmas for my 4-year-old son)
  • Chase wild children to get clothes onto them
  • Threaten wild children with NO CARTOONS at breakfast (via laptop) if they don’t sit down NOW
  • Get ready as semi-tame children eat and watch “Paw Patrol”
  • Stuff toast in my mouth
  • After repeating self multiple times, threaten wild children with bodily harm if they don’t get their boots and coats on NOW
  • Run out the door to warm up car to cries of “Mommy, wait!”
  • Scrape ice off car windows as husband says “I could have done that.” Reply “what are you waiting for?” (Note: I said it jokingly. I hope.)
  • Drive car as wild children yell over each other.
  • Tackle snow drift half as tall as my 2YO at 4YO’s school, toss 4YO into some teacher’s arms and hope she works for CPS (Chicago Public Schools)
  • Drop off clingy 2YO at her school, get lots of hugs – her first day of pre-K!
  • Park car, hit the CTA Brown Line stop, catch train immediately and get a seat. Sweet.
